Importance of Preferential Segregation by Aerodynamics in Dust Rig Tests

This work studies the design of a device conveying dust and sand in order to understand how particles impinge, erode rebound from target plate. The motivation behind this study is understanding ingestion erosion aviation gas-turbine engines. system consists constant area duct which are injected upstream direction using particle seeder. exit through converging nozzle directed towards Particles varying sizes tested at two different gas speeds. velocity conveyor follows trend inversely proportional diameter. After exiting, respond differently changes flow field based on their largest move ballistically, so they impact with nearly same had exit. However, small follow streamlines around target. causes them both significantly slow down disperse all directions. combination near-target trajectory behaviors leads non-monotonic as function importance these effects depends strongly relative angle between LES compared RANS, it demonstrated that RANS capable accurately predicting mean statistics. results display narrower statistical variation than LES, suggests dispersion underpredicted RANS.
